Not sure a woman's perspective is any different TBH..... and if it is, I've been told so often how un-typical I am that maybe I'm not best placed Wink

But thx and I shall have a mooch around the place.

I notice you are in Aus - all my Dad's side of my family live in NSW, mostly South Penrith, Blacktown and near the blue mountains. Been there a few times and enjoyed it a lot.

The one advantage you may have over the likes of me at least , is your hearing.
I don't mean to generalise but a lot of us man types spend a lot of time in noisy places earning our wage.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmm....biker rock chick ?
Forget that then , your lugs are probably worse than mine !!!!! lol!

Now there is enough of us we could have a Yorkshire ' bake off '...........with beer ?

Yep - I used to be a biker rock chick - loved motorbikes, but my love of speed and the vulnerability of being on a bike when so many car drivers are blind/stupid/both ....... I got out on the grounds of self preservation. But still miss it.
And yes, lots of rock gigs.......

Bake off sounds good, but my kit is not portable. The amp weighs 50kgs!!! Not long ago I could have said that my amp weighed more than me!! lol.

Hello Samantha, You're that rare, rare and very valuable creature , a female audiophile.
It's an aspect of the audio industry that's always puzzled me, that is the almost complete absence of women as customers and as heads of the industry ( http://manleylabs.com/bioeveanna.html excepted).
Even on the retail side women are under represented. Some years ago I think I found a clue as to why that is. A leading Audio retailer here hired a young lady part time in sales. She had a background as a recording engineer and professional musician. She was very good at her job but all the male audiophile big spenders would refuse to deal with her. Go figure.
Anyhow welcome to the forum ---- I'm looking forward to a perspective we seldom hear about. I'd especially be interested hear who your own female friends react to your interest in audio & music.

Hi JS - sorry for my tardy reply.

I realise that there are less women into this hobby and yes, tis a puzzle. But I think it is for different reasons to the 'being ignored' one.

I think society norms put the woman into the role of home-maker. The man may be the bread-winner, but she is deemed to be the one who keeps it all working. Has to be the sensible one. Has to 'grow up'.
So she tends to not put priority on toys.
Men however like toys and it is valid to argue "work hard, deserve a treat".

Now the world is different and many women find themselves in the role of bread winner as well as home maker. Many choose a single lifestyle or a partnership but no kids. Many shun 'society norms'. I certainly do.

I work hard, I like toys. I see no need to 'grow up' and don't see any need to conform to what society expects. We only have one shot at life, so do what you want and enjoy it (consenting adults & harming no-one of course).

I understand the problem the lady in the hifi store had though. I used to run a car club and also got involved in the motoring press a little and sourced vehicles for some TV shows ..... I always used the shortened version of my name as I knew that some people would be put off if they realised I was a woman. The car club was funny - I would receive emails and answer questions when people had problems or wanted to know stuff regarding their cars - and the advice was usually gratefully received, but if the query came via phone call - sometimes you would hear the dubious tone of the voice and I would know I was wasting my breath and the caller would go ask 'a man' even if that man knew half what I did.

Prejudice is a silly thing, and it is always the biggot that comes out looking stupid.

Oh, your final point ...... I actually have more male friends than female - but of my female friends, one uses my old kit (Linn amp, Meridian CDP, Epos speakers) and loves it - loves my current system and when she comes over, we always make some time for music. Another is less interested in hifi, but she is a music fan and plays in 2 bands. Others - no interest or understanding.

All true BUT it's interesting how women, well at least here in Australia, are willing to permit the spending of a fairly high % of a family budget on home theatre yet not to 2 channel, music only systems. I have two theories about why that's so. Home theatre is a family activity whereas 2 channel stereo, with it's more often than not narrow sweet spot, tends to be a selfish one person only pursuit. Generalizations i know but I think there's something in it. Another theory I have is that women's hearing, being in general much more sensitive in the treble regions, reacts negatively to harsh so called hi-fi systems that have been tuned to the defective hearing of their male owners.
There are other reasons why a lot of women don't get on with hi-fi - it's 'machine' like appearance for instance that companies such as Bose have woken up to, thus making themselves a fortune selling 'almost' invisible systems that just happen to be absolute rubbish.

Interesting that the woman I mentioned earlier who worked briefly as an audio sales person was also into bikes. She's still riding a Dukati 1000 sports at 59 though. Brave girl!

Girl after my own heart ..... enjoying toys!

I think the Home Cinema observation is very valid.

Perhaps as it is sort of an extension of watching TV, that is how it gets through as 'families' watch TV together and go to the movies.
It would be rare that adults and kids would all want to sit and enjoy music together - irrespective of a sweet spot or not.

There is a lot of stunning hifi equipment though so I don't think it is aesthetics. I think it is the 'one person indulgence' that is what counts against it. Although for me, it is often a social joint pleasure where my friend and I will take turns choosing next the next piece of music to play.

For any business I believe it's vital to have a woman on board, I'd never work with another bloke, it would just end up being too blokey, a woman adds a whole new perspective, one thing about business is presentation and I think woman have some really good input in these areas, they just have skills us men sadly lack, I would have thought having a woman on your sales team would have boosted sales, I have zero problem dealing with women in sales, in fact I prefer to deal with women then salesmen.

It women who are the boss thats the problem Very Happy
