| Newbie here. I'm currently using a tired Marantz CD63SE and I'm wanting to upgrade the player. I like a warm, smooth and relaxing sound, something that imitates a good vinyl set up without the hassles that come with owning it.
My budget is 1.5K, what kind of player should I be adding to my audition list? |

| Yep, Rega Saturn. Perhaps Shanling as well. |

Some of the purist vinyl fanatics who post here will tell you that's an impossible aim Smoothy. My first move would be to insert something like a Musical Fidelity valve buffer stage between your CD63SE and your amplifier. You may find that gives you all you're looking for without having to buy a new CD player. MF buffer stages often come up on eBay and the valves aren't expensive or hard to get hold of. |

| Why would adding the extra distortion from valves make a CD sound like a analogue set up. It may make it sound like a deck and valve based phono stage, but nothing like a Lyra-west set up (Certainly not warm and fluffy) |

| A friend of mine said also the Arcams players were good, another suggested Cairn? I never heard of them, also Audio analogue and also Sonneteer, are these familiar or a bit dated? |

| I auditioned a Rega system about 7/8 years ago and personally I thought it sounded boring. Personally I would try:
Musical Fidelity (1st choice), and in no particular order Marantz - but a newer model Acram - I think you might like their sound,
Those are themain three that come to my mind. |

| The old Arcam Alpha 5+ was a killer of a player, it was so right for the price. The Alpha 9 was also sweet with the DCS ringdac, maybe a bit old but these two are bargains second hand.
Marantz are OK, a bit safe sounding so they might suit your tastes requirements. |

The old Arcam were fab, I loved the Arcam alpha 5+ I always wanted one, but at the time the Arcam was so much more expensive the the Micromega stage 1 here in Spain so I went for the Micromega and never regretted it, that was such a good player, I lovely big warm sound, one of the best CD players I've enjoyed owning that one.
The Sonneteer Byron is always very sweet sounding sounding, Sonneteer haven't touch it really since it was first introduced, a few different transports have been used but in general the same sounding player, a lovely presentation, sweet, warm, unforced and good term term listening from it with getting cd fatigue, a Arcam, Micromega or Sonneteer are all good. |

| If it's not too late, Yamaha's CDX 993 is the ideal machine for you.
I own one and can attest that it delivers what it has in spades. Close your eyes, and using a well produced CD you will be hard pressed to say it's a CD player at all.
In addition to which it is built like a tank. Twin power transformers, one for digital, the other for analog, it has a power supply most integrated amplifiers only wish for, a serious Sony semiprofessional quality pickup mechanism and an output section you don't expect to see below 5 grand. If you like, I can elaborate on that.
However, it is out of production, so you can pick up only a second hand one. Hence, look at sites which advertise and sell that, like e-bay. |
