Essentially, it's a rather classic pair of bookshelf speakers, using the 2-by-1 format. 10" bass, 4" midrange, 1" tweeter, both cones use Son Audax' version of Aerogel, tweeter was their best, a titanium vapor deposition dome. Electrically, it's the easiest dynamic loudspeaker load I have ever heard of, nominally 8 Ohms, minimum at 6.5 Ohms, worst case phase shift -25%, 92 dB/2.83V/1m. Any SET amp, rated at 5 Watts and upwards, will drive it with ease in a room, at normal volume listening levels. Effective internal volume around 70 litres (app. 4.3 cubic feet), reflex port tuned for maximum low bass linearity at 36 Hz, it will go as low as 30 Hz in a room.
The crossover is split into three separate parts, joined together at the back with three pairs of binding posts. Thus, by simple rewiring, you can take the speaker from classic single drive to biamping, triamping, semi active (une amp driving the bass via electronic crossover, another driving the mid and tweeter in a passive configuration) or fully active (separate amp driving each driver with an electronic crossover).
Front baffle is 60 mm (2.4 inches) thick. Internally, it uses bracing all around, arranged in such a way as to provide maximum sound wave breakup, so as to reduce standing waves as much as possible. It is also slanted at 7 degrees, so that at 9-10 feet distance, the drivers are phase alligned. Total net weight per box is around 28 kilos (app.62 lbs). Internal wiring is pure silver wires by Neotech, capacitors are compund (using in parallel metalized capacitors made of different materials, avoiding the sonic print inherent to any one type), mostly by Wima.
Crossovers are 2nd and 3rd order phase alligned Linkwitz-Riley, at 800 Hz (bass to mid) and 3.5 kHz (mid to tweeter). Continuous power capability is 150 Watts RMS, impulse ("music") power over 300 Watts. In a room, powered by an amp of 150W per channel rating, they are capable of reaching true concert hall levels, with no buts, ifs or maybes.
The original idea of an upgradeable speaker was mine, and I wrote the design brief. It was then developed by a good friend, Mirko Bevenja of B&M Acoustics (now unfortunately gone) and myself over a period of around 7 months, using a panel of judges of around 20 people, most being professional musicians. Mine has a serial number of 00001, and they had just started making quite a splash with it, exporting to Holland, Italy and Germany, when the "B" in the moniker suffered a racing bike accident, leaving him alive but beside the small finger of the left hand, completely paralyzed and locked to a wheelchair for life. This in turn brought about the demise of the company, because if the saying the there's a healthy mind in a healthy body is true, then unfortunately the opposite is also true.
A great pity! This was supposed to be an addition to a previously existing smaller, 2x speaker, and a third large floorstaning model was on the way, much like mine but with a second 10" bass driver added.
The worst part is that Mirko, an unquestionably very gifted man regarding loudspeakers, was so revolted that he gave up loudspeakers altogether. I feel this to be a great loss in general, we can never have too many gifted people. |

| Your point about languages dvv highlights perfectly what I'm trying to say, you can pick up a language in a few months where me it would take a few years, it goes it but at a very slow rate and with others it never goes in at all, while true they make no effort some things seem to go against the grain when it comes to learning, why is it some people have no coordination so they can't dance or play sports?
Nice speakers, but why was Mirko so revolted? you do say, revolted with whom or what? |

| Well, after his lifelong friend and business partner Blaža survived his motorbike racing accident as a lifelong prisoner of the wheelchair, he changed, and then some. He became mean even to Mirko, which was used by another guy to replace Mirko. Eventually, Mirko took what he could and then simply packed up and left. The other guy took over and drew the loudspeaker part of the company into the ground in less than 6 months, and given his ignorance, I am surprised it took even that long.
Today, Mirko works at a totally different job, nothing to do with audio, and Blaža is left without the loudspeaker part of the company and without Mirko, thus compounding his overall loss. |

| Have you chosen to keep your speakers passive, and if so can I ask why you have chosen to keep them this way. |

| No Tuck, I'm simply waiting to finish the development of my own power amps, after which I intend to make them all active.
In my experience, there is NOTHING on this planet that will beat a quality active system, although I must add that such a system will by default carry an equally high quality price.
THAT'S why made the speaker upgradeable, so people wouldn't have to dish out the whole sum all at once, but could spread it over time.
And I'm not worried about the electronic crossover, not with my regular stock of Analog Devices ultra fast op amps, although I am toying with the idea of making that discrete as well. A bit complicated, but it can be done. |

| To answer your question properly, Joker, I suppose it can be used on shelves, but I prefer to use it (with a stand) on the floor, if I can. If it were used as a bookshelf, I would strongly recommend you use some form of decoupling the speaker from the surface it's sitting on. Sponge would be ideal, be it natural in several pieces, or be it artificial, as a custom cut tab. Bookshelf positioning has a way of exaggerating the bass, and with it's played this well as is, it would be a shame to have it smeared. OK, mate? |
