Can I ask if some one on this forum has had a demo of this NAD, I love NAD as you may well have guessed by now, and I think that this amplifier uses some of the technology found in the top NAD model the M3 meaning that it should be quiet special sounding.

Not to put anyone off, but I have never understood what was so special about the modern series of NADs?

True, they have the kind of circuitry you would not expect at that price point, and are extremely load tolerant, this is their hallmark point, and a good one, to be sure. The quality of build is above the average for their class, that's also true, and consequently, they tend to live long, trouble free service lives.

On the other hand, they always sounded disinterested to me, passion factor zero. Detached. About as exciting as a wet blanket.

To each his own, I suppose ...

I thought you rated the 3020 dvv? My brother in law had one and I never got it, especially on CD, it sounded better with vinyl, but ultimately boring.

In its day, it was miles ahead of its compeitition. But that day has passed long ago.

Because NAD did pull that stunt off, plus a few others with some receivers of the day in the late 70-ies, doesn't mean they have a life long patent to anything. Nor does it mean that beceuse it's by NAD, it's automatically great.

Adam, if you saw their power amp service schematic, I think you'd faint. I can't remember when was the last time I saw such complex schematic, it is way more complex than many a famous name with an astronomical price list. In my view, this is bound to cause trouble because I prefer to keep it as simple as I can for any given function; start dumping materials with a shovel into anything and it's not likely to sound great. Not impossible, but definitely not likely.

nad are good budget components in my view, no more no less. Ideal for using in a strident budget system with speakers that have a coarse sounding treble unit, the downside side is that grey plastic look, I don't see many households wanting that look in there front room, they just look so dated and like they are stuck in the 1980s.

Looks are probably the most subjective part of this hobby. Regarding NAD, I never liked their grey colour, it always came across as being neither here nor there, not natural aluminium, not black. Grey, in combination with obviously plastic black knobs was perhaps a mortician's dream design, but certainly not mine.

Then again, as opposed to tinhat, the design would be my last port of call for an audio device, the music it makes would account for 80% of my preference, and everything else the last 20%. I realize however than many people invert this.

Actually dvv I was say the old 3020 was much better built than the newer models, I had a 312 in my shop and it was very plasticy.

About the looks, I think for most people, 80% is looks and 20% is sound, just look at B&O for proof. Even that is dated looking now.

The NAD M3 though is a killer amp, I love this amp, I believe that the one before this was a Gryphon on the inside.

NAD sounds good to these old ear, the perfect foil for bright speakers. I agree about the looks but I don't sit in front of it eyeing it up.

I'm sure it is if you have that kind of spare money for high priced amplifiers. Most things at that price will sound good.

Besides, at those prices, it faces some very serious competition.
