How do you feel about this old Brit amp, should it go down in history as one of the all time greats or was it just a victim of magazine hype and was actually nothing special at all.

In its day it was hard to beat as an overall value for money proposition. Nowadays it's easily beaten, but in its day it was a strong competitor.

A bit on the cold steely side, needed to be partnered with care.

Yeah, I have to agree. I have owned Audiolab products and, at the time, they were a good upgrade from NAD. They were an upgrade over their peers, but not exceptional.
There are so many products that out perform them, these days, that they can no longer be considered be cutting edge.
Good but not great. |

A friend had the S and another the C&P pre and powers and I felt the S to offer better value for money.

The only Audiolab amps worth going after are the Q pre amp, forget the C, dire pre, the the last MX monos, might as well pass on the rest.

There was a time (.. if I remember right in the early 90's..), Audiolab competed 'neck to neck' with Naim.. I remember reading a review comparing the two ( Naim Nait 3 and Audiolab 8000 A), which concluded: '' The Naim is an amp. for the heart, the Audiolab for the brain", take your pick! Here in Australia, the 8000 A was a smashing hit and (according to my audio dealer friend), sold a lot of units. For many audiophiles, it was the 'natural' upgrade from the likes of early NAD or Rotel. Competition came from Musical Fidelity, Cyrus, Quad and of course, Naim. I also followed that path, Akai (!), ---> Rotel, ---> Audiolab, ---> Threshold ... etc. etc. Still got the Audiolab 8000T tuner which after 17 years of excellent performance is in desperate need of an overhaul!

I always enjoyed my Audiolab 8000A, it took a Sonneteer Alabaster to really make me feel I had made a worthwhile upgrade in sound rather than some thing that just sounded different.
