Just a quick hello. Ive recently joined this forum for a bit of advice here and there and a bit of chit chat too. Ive had a quick look round and noticed some fantastic set ups that some of you are lucky to have, but sadly mine is not going to be one. Fact is Ive put mine together for a little over £100 so i dont think its going to set rooms alight but it does sound quite a bit more pleasant than the old midi system it replaced. I have a Denon PMA 350 SE amp which I picked up over 10 years ago and never used, A Sony CDP-XE510 cd, which I got with the amp and went straight into the same wardrobe A used cambridge audio interconnect £5 ebay. A lovely pair of Mission 700 speakers £21 ebay. A pair of Atacama Nexxus stands £10 ebay and some oxygen free 322 strand speaker cable which is probably not very good but has every chance of being better than the old bell wire To me it sounds very good but im only comparing it with the previous midi I have been offered an Arcam Alpha 7se cd player from a guy at work too, would this be a better player than the sony? Any advice is greatfully received. Thanks, Martin.

Hi there and welcome First of all if this is ur first system from a midi uve done really well to get that gear together for the price u have paid so nice one! If it sounds good then great! The arcam would be a huge improvemnt on the sony that is a really excellent cdp, and if u could get ur mitts on an arcam amp from ebay one day u would have an excellent combination! Cable wise for ur current system great but if u start popping in better bits of gear in the future u can upgrade these cables at a modest rate along with the system. Look forwaed to seeing more of u on here Martin Dan

Welcome aboard Martin, I'm new here too but it's a good little forum. You shouldn't be embarrased about your kit dude. Everyone has to start somewhere and I bought all my gear off e-bay, apart from the amp which was bought privately. If the guy at work is offering you the Arcam CDP for silly money...go for it, it's a well reviewed CDP. My kit was also a first step up from a midi hifi and IMO it didn't make a lot of sense to spend lots on new stuff when I didn't (and still don't) know much about hifi. All the Best Stiffy

Hey Martin, welcome to this club. Hope you have fun. 322 strand cable? Wow, that's a lot of strands.

Ah, I recognize that now. In fact, the downside is the use of such thin strands - less strands of thicker copper usually gives a better result. As you say I wouldn't worry about it, or anything in your system to be honest, but just so's you know, there are bona fide speaker cables such as QED Silver Anniversary XT or Chord Carnival SilverScreen which are about the same money (I think they're £6/m) and very capable. Not something you need to action on, just to keep under your hat.
