PostSubject: Record cleaning fluid recipe please .   Tue Sep 14, 2010 7:29 am

Yeah yeah I know its on every forum but every one I've tried either leaves marks or does'nt get the muck out and leaves gunge in the grooves. I think it all comes down to the component that makes them dyr 'clean' I've tried all the usual , dishwasher rinse aid etc but nope .
I bought a ' permostat ' kit which you spray on , rub in with one pad then buff up with the second pad. It's great. But it's damned expensive !
It must be made of something though.......anyone know the perfect recipe ?
( I'm not talking about car boot filth. Just good cleanISH LPs .

try this http://www.coolgales.com/store/cart.php?target=product&product_id=333&category_id=52. You'll have to clean with the fluid and a brush, rinse well in distilled water, and put to drain dry.

You could also try one of these http://www.audiodestination.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=49

I used one for a while, but found you had to clean your vinyl in it twice, once with a cleaning fluid, then again in clean distilled water to get as much 'gunk' out of the grooves as possible, and even then it left a residue that your stylus dug out, especially with the supplied fluid, not so much with the art du son.

I have tried a few home brew type fluids, getting some of the required ingrediants can be a right royal pain in the ass. This L'art du son mixes with distilled water, and just works (on a wet vac system anyway). When you mix it keep it in a coloured bottle, (the white fairy liquid ones are fine) in a dark cupboard.

Given that you are a Vinyl fiend unless you have one, treat yourself to a wet vac cleaning machine and give your vinyl a serious upgrade. All you need is something like the Okki Nokki, a cleaning brush, or a cut down 2" bristle (not Nylon) paint brush and away you go. I use around 2.5ml of the dilute cleaning fluid per album side. even a manky s/hand LP only takes 5 mins. and both side are clean, not just shiny, but deep into the groove clean and ready to go.

If being a yorkie, you are not prepared to pay for one the branded machines, any old turntable and a wet vac cleaner will do. You will need to fabricate a cleaning head from the crevice type nozzle that most cleaners have. I did just that for a while, and find the extra ease of use, and easy storage of the Okki, plus the superb cleaning results well worth the money.

Cheers Col .
Thing is I'm only talking about LPs I pick up from decent shops. All my top discs are spotless , having been done at 'the den' for £1 a pop. So I don't think a £400 machine will be valid. It's just some fluid to wipe round with a cloth I need.
As far as being a yorkshireman goes. I wish I could keep my ' brass' in my pocket , then I maybe could splash out on a machine ?
Rolling Eyes
Like you I tried a disco but found after about 5 LPs I had to start re cleaning. The records were ok to start with then a line of dirt would appear where the brushes had been in contact. I don't much like using the old Linn theory of using the stylus to clean the record !

It's the only way to go is to get them done by a machine such as sams moth, a Keith monk, a VPI, these mixtures are OK for a quick play but don't offer a last solution because they still leave the fluid on the vinyl and it just get distributed to another part of the vinyl, when really it needs to be sucked off.

Heres a thought-associate of mine has expensive record cleaning machine...
we tried a little test
i use very very mild detergent solution and LOTS of rinsing
after many trials we realised that my method was just as effective as hers!!
all these machines seem to do is buff....
any solvent based chemical will leave a trace and etch the vinyl
dont believe the hype!

In that case I suggest you try again, this time use a microscope and have a look in the grooves, not on the surface. When we did a comparison between washing and rinsing (repeated) and wet vac cleaning the differences where marked in terms of in the groove cleanliness. It also reduced static far more effectivley. If you have a decent library of LP's I would not regard £400 ish as particularly expensive as a investment in the condition. How much would a 1500 or so library cost to replace, if it could be.

I'll have to shake those ' yorkie' moths out of my wallet methinks. I would do a better job than a cleaning service anyway. Like not re using fluid etc . I admit everytimr I find the cash I tend to think ' mmm, thats new cart money' . It's got to be done though . How much to spend though ?
do I need to save mega dosh for a thread in the groove jobbee ?

from my experiance no, the Okki gets them clean, its just a tad noisey, as in vacuum cleaner noisey.

I use a ''cleaning'' record brush, as in separate from the one you keep next to the deck. A cut down 2" paint brush, and one of the coolgales cleaning brushes. Stick the record on the platter, screw down, give it a bit of a cats lick and promise to get the surface crap out of the way. Apply around 2.5 mls of the dilute cleaning fluid, and spread it around the total record surface with the cleaning brush, revolve the platter both ways when applying the cleaner. Leave it to stand for a little while, dependent on surface condition, (you soon learn) then vac it off in both directions. When it dry, turn and repeat. Into a nice new inner, back into the sleeve, and onto the pile to play and sort.

Mark - I think my Moth cost £250 from memory.

It isn't pretty, but it does the job better IMO than the manual methods. Plus means you can take advantage of £1 and £2 second hand bargains which you otherwise may not. Factor in how much most new vinyl costs and it soon starts to pay for its own keep.

Pardon my ignorance Sam, but is the improvement THAT much ?
Obviously, I am not talking about damaged vinyl but can it really restore an old record to 'as new' ?
