I've been doing some testing of this new oyaide turntable mat along with their new record clamp

The Oyaide STB-MS.
I was to try these new goodies with my VPI scoutmaster, cartridge is the Denon DL110, amplifier is the AstinTrew AT2000, phono stage is the AstinTrew AT800, and the speakers are the new Kudos X2, speaker cable used is the new Acoustic revive SPC reference and the interconnect was a Groover UR6.
In standard form I find the VPI a tad dark sounding, bass especially can tend to err on the very deep but slightly heavy and dark side, the VPI also produces are very powerful sound, but is also not a great detail retriever, it's sound is definitely on the dark side, you would never for example mistake for a CD player so different is the character to CD.
The VPI has a very deep Acrylic platter which I thbik helps contribute to the deep powerful bass produced by the Scoutmaster. Also the VPI has its own plastic record clamp which I'm not that keen on, everytime you want to play a new record or change side you need to keep unscrewing and rescrewing the thing up or down.
I was to test the Oyaide with two records, firstly Peter gabriel and the superb SO album and Secondly Level 42 and world machine.
Firstly on went the Oyaide MJ-12 aluminium mat, a word of notice here, you will need to change slighlty the VTA of you arm which is very easy to do on the VPI JPW9 tonearm.
Second I replaced the plastic VPI for the new Oyaide clamp, which looks and feels quality, you can actually adjust the weights inside the clamp to suit to sound your looking for, for this test I left the weights as how they arrived, i.e fully laden.
So firstly on went Peter Gabriel, with the standard VPI I could end up with a slightly slurry one note bass, but with the new Oyaide pieces in place I instantly noted a much cleaner bass response, notes where more easy to follow and defined, for sure it didn't go down as deep, but they were much easier to follow, the had more impact, as if someone has turned the thwack o metre up a notch or two, bass lines had a new found punch to them with slightly better timing making it much more enjoyable to listen to.
But the real improvements and most noticeable changes can at the top end, these products are detail meister, gone is the slightly dark character of the VPI and in it's place you now listen to a deck that sound like it has found a new spring in its stride, it sounds more lively, more macro dynamics, and more inner detail, I like this presentation, it really does give a far more warts and all style of presentation.
Moving on the Level 42 time machine LP these differences are even more noticable, drums really now have far greater impact and snap, snare drums hit harder and bass has more kick, vocals a more forward in the mix and the sound is far more livelier and punchy, it's as if it's just had a bowl of shredded wheat for breakfast.
I've enjoyed the differences these two new Oyaide products bring, if you find the VPI and bit dark sounding and bass a tad too heavy the Oyaide MJ-12 and the record clamp will help to bring about a far more punchy sound that has bass lines that are easier to follow, but above all you'll notice the instant improvement in detail retrieval, this really is there main forte.
