For a probably larger than avrage room size in England . Approx 18x 18 feet with a 10 feet high ceiling.
Solid as rock walls but big windows and a bouncy floor .
Iwant some thump and detail . Imaging is also important .
I suppose I want a jack of all trades but I dont want shrinking violets nor do I want a paint stripping treble. Just sweet neutral with plenty of transients and wack ! Bass must be tight cos of the floor .
Looks completely secondary , I get no hassle from anyone about that as the house only contains music lovers.
Amp gives 70 wpc.
Vinyl ONLY so They must convey all the detail and nuances that the medium is capable of !
it might seem I'm asking a lot but in this day and age for near a grand It should be possible.

I think you spoilt for choice there are tons of good speakers under £1000, the problem may well be synergy, in other words what will work well with cyrus. For example one of my favourites is the Revolver music 3, it has a sound that is an ideal match for valve amps, it is superb on vocals, superb imaging, bass is deep and treble is sweet, it has a more old fashioned mellow sound, so it won't suit the boom and tizz brigade or impress you from the off.

What about Dynaudio, I think they work well with Cyrus, oh dear the list is endless, what do other Cyrus users use? Totem are good but over budget I think.

I find a lot of speakers sound a bit boom and tizz today, they have a balance that's a cross between home cinema and music and something that will sound good in a 10 minute demo but will tire the ears on longer listening, where as I tend to go for a speaker that will sound more real, more natural, at first these speakers won't particularly impress, but give them a long listen and there strengths become apparent, for example I used the have the monitor audio RS6 and RS8, play them against the neat Motive 2 and you will notice, well I did, that the Neat will sound more natural, more musical, B&W and Monitor Audio I find will suit the younger listener that likes a bit of get up and go and a sound to impress your mates, but for relaxing to music for a long term requires a different sound, something more natural, laid back, smoother, I found as I got older I look for a more natural sound, but if I was younger the Monitor Audio, B&W type floorstander would be top of my list.

Try proac and spens, if you can find any used Neat may be a good bet as well. But take your amp with you.

others say b&ws sound is accurate and insightful yet not particularly exciting ?
I wanted to save some leg work but maybe it's impossible with so much ' each to their own ' ?

I've always found the bigger B&Ws a bit clinical TBH. I heard a set-up with B&Ws at Hamish's gaff which was lots of dosh and sounded harsh and aggressive. I like speakers that can give a bit of attack when called for, but not all the time and tiring.

When I was speaker shopping, I went to Doncaster HiFi Studios and listened to loads of stuff as they were selling up.

Lots didn't do it for me, but the stuff I enjoyed included Living Voice and Audio Physic

Which models come in at the price point I've no idea as I don't shop often and when I was shopping for speakers, I was going either used or ex-dem.

Actually, with your sun-room requirements, I've not heard them, but it might be worth you paying Hamish a visit to listen to the Piega TS5 Loudspeakers he has in ...... retail is over £1.5k but he has some with 5 hrs use which he is selling for less than £1k - they are very slim and aluminium so shouldn't suffer from fade in the sun.

These are worth a look if your willing to buy 2nd hand

http://www.hifiwigwam.com/showthread.php?43305-FS-Leema-Xaviers-in-Cherry

or these

http://www.hifiwigwam.com/showthread.php?39868-Neat-Elite-SE-speakers (perhaps a little over priced offer £650-700 IMO)

not sure if both are still for sale but worth a PM if either take your fancy.

The only hi-fi shops I know of in York are Vickers and the Sound Org. There is the audio room out at Hedon (near Hull), they did stock cyrus and B&W, plus Proac I think, so it would be worth a call to them. If you want call round by me with your amp tucked under your arm and we can plug it into the spendors I use.

2nd hand hi fi in stockton often have some interesting kit in, the have some Revel's at the mo, that will be a little over budget but well worth a listen.

Moorgate in sheffield often have used/ex dem stuff available as well.

The wam links are not visible at the mo dude .
I just had a look at the 684s . To be honest I liked em a lot with a SRM turntable, lovely and fast and for twin bass drivers and two ports they did seem in brilliant control of the bass .
I know I said looks were 2nd but they struck me straight away as being a bit shoddy casework wise. Like stickyback plastic lol !
Was impressed by the sonics though.

Adam I think maybe your opinion of the cyrus sound is with amps other than the 8 vs2 ?
it's nowhere near as aggressive and spitty as the earlier cyrus,in fact it's much more pleasant an smoother than naim stuff.
so Fast speakers are ok with it.
colin, i can't stretch to spens and there's not many second hand about .
i had some preludes for years thougj they were much older natch.
M aybe it's time you sold me yours eh ?

Marky it's one of those forum rumours and myths that get blown out of all proportions, Cyrus have many fans because they sound good, it's fashionable to knock them, they never consider it might be some other part of the chain that may be at fault.
